Demand for external GDPR expertise needs more time to build

As the deadline grows closer for complying with the General Data Protection Rule (GDPR) being put into effect May 25, 2018, by the European Union, there’s a marked difference in attitudes between IT organizations in Europe and in the U.S. concerning the need to rely on third-party expertise. 

A survey of 779 IT professionals based in Europe, the U.K., and the U.S. conducted by Spiceworks, an online community of IT professionals, finds that 46 percent of the respondents based in Europe are likely to rely on third-party consultants for help with GDPR compliance. In contrast, the survey finds only 33 percent of the respondents based in the United Kingdom plan to do so, and among respondents based in the U.S. that number drops to 29 percent.

You, your customers, and GDPR

With less than 12 months to go until GDPR is enforceable, it is time to start looking at your customers, which services they subscribe to, and where you can help plug the gaps.

Begin speaking with your direct contacts within the business by asking whether GDPR has been discussed at a senior level and if so, has a Data Protection Officer been appointed, as it may well be your contact.

Majority of companies already falling behind on GDPR compliance

There are a little less than 260 working days between now and when the European Union is expected to implement a General Data Protection Rule (GDPR) that among other things fines companies up to 20 million euros or 4 percent of their revenues for willful non-compliance.  The rule is scheduled to take effect May 25, 2018, but a new survey of 225 senior IT security executives in the U.S. and United Kingdom conducted by Guidance Software, a provider of security forensics tools, suggests that as many as a quarter of companies will not be able to meet that deadline. In fact, the survey finds that only 16 percent of the respondents are in an advanced state of GDPR planning.
